Common plantain is often remembered as a herbal remedy in the United Kingdom. The leaves have been used to treat various skin complaints and to heal wounds; a poultice of the leaves is useful for insect bites and minor sores. A tea or tincture was used for coughs and bronchitis.

Common plantain has astringent properties, against mucus, as well as mild antibacterial activity. It contains a plant compound called allantoin, which is postulated to promote wound healing by increasing cell regeneration and inhibiting bacterial infection.
