In each location we tried to learn to intorduce ourselves as quickly as possible - thes eare my notes on this, taken on the first day. Seeing patients and getting to know people through a translator is very slow, and it's hard to develop a rapport, but at least being able to say hello and ask someone's name helps a bit. On the left page are my scribbles for peoples names. There were about 40 people in the group of biaka that we stayed with, and initially my notes just recorded peoples t-shirts (batman in the case above) or relationships. I always try to learn the word for turtle in what ever country i'm in. I rarely get a chance to use it (though in congo we encountered them frequently) but we had a pet turtle when we were growing up that my father had for 57 years.
