in the last shots of episode one we're trying to climb a tree. the biaka wanted to climb it to get some honey and we wanted to film them doing this. Setting our camera up in the tree angered the bees and they attacked us. Our soundman tom beard was nearly over whelmed by stings and spent most of the rest of the day vomiting. He'd been stung about 50times and we were very worried about him. I only got stung 20 or so times but african bees are pretty vicious and i ended up feeling terrible. Xand seemed to have got away with it but woke up the next morning looking like pob and feeling dreadful. Sadly we didn't even manage to film the bee attack so there's not explanation for how xand ends up looking so daft. One of the numerous added complications of filming in such remote places.

Bee stings can be really dangerous in the wrong place - that eye doesn't look too clever but the playwright Joe Orton's boyfriend Kenneth Halliwell, a failed writer who ended up beating Orton to death with a hammer, watched his own mother die in front of him within minutes of being stung in the mouth. He was 11. May explain part of the anger that fueled his killing of his talented young lover. And all because of a bee. To bee or not to be.

One word- ouch! Bee stings are nasty enough without having them in remote places, and not having somewhere to splash clean water on to help cool them and ease the pain. I'm jut glad that wasn't me as i'm allergic to bee and wasp stings! Poor Xand,
