St John’s wort is a good alternative to prescription anti-depressants. You have to take it for at least 4 weeks to start noticing the effects, though

Be careful starting a regimen of St. John's wort. It can interfere with the action of other drugs, most notably prescription birth control. Be sure to talk to your doctor!
