Low carb diets - do they work?

contributed by mikocoffey 06 Feb | 16:15

This week’s episode (Healthiest Hearts) seems to support the mounting evidence that low-carb, protein-rich diets can be healthy. This has been popularised by Atkins, and most recently, Taubes.

But it goes against our longheld teachings that low-fat diets are best for health. And in fact, the Chukchi people seemed to eat a lot of fat (whale blubber, etc) and didn’t seem to have ill effects.

So is a low-carb diet safe? And is it healthier than a low-fat diet? And what about fat? It’s all so confusing.

It's a case of eat everything in moderation, long term low fat or low carb diet's will have an impact on your body and can cause problems. Yes a low carb diet is good, and eating lower in fat food and carbs will make you healthier, however too much of everything can make you ill. Im sure the Chukci people do have ill-health at time but not to the extent that westeners do as they do not consume diets and live the way we do i.e. not taking up as much exercise as non-westeners etc, all that whale blubber won't be good for them in the long term but yes low fa diets are better for us all.

Yeah, when I tried to cut out carbs, I saw a definate difference - for the better :) Coz most foods have hidden carbs in them otherwise, like fizzy drinks (and I am NOT about to give those up!), so you are still getting a few. As well as a decrease in my weight, I also saw my skin clear up amazingly. So if anyone's gonna go on a yo-yo diet, I would recommend cutting out carbs for two weeks :)
